Red Sage End of Life Care

The Difference Between Palliative Care and Hospice

Our clinic offers both palliative care– focused on pain management and rehabilitation– and hospice care, which is centered on end-of-life support. Hospice care for pets does not aim to cure the underlying illness but rather provide comfort and support during the pet's final days, weeks, or months.  Dr. Jeret Benson is a veterinarian certified in animal hospice and palliative care. Her role is to ensure that you understand these options and feel fully supported in making the best decision for your pet.

End of Life Care

At Red Sage, we understand that as pets age or face serious illness, families often have questions about their pets’ quality of life and how to navigate difficult end-of-life decisions. Our hospice and palliative care services are designed to offer guidance, support, and compassionate care during this time.

What a typical appointment looks like

When you bring your beloved pet to us for palliative or hospice care, our goal is to help you understand your pet’s condition and make their remaining time as comfortable as possible. We look at factors like pain levels, mobility challenges, incontinence, sleep quality, cognition, and the overall home environment. Then, we tailor a plan that suits both your pet’s needs and your family’s situation.

Ongoing support and decision making

We continue to meet regularly, adjusting your pet’s care as their needs change, and supporting you through each stage of the decision-making process. Together, we assess their comfort and quality of life so you never have to navigate these questions alone. Whether your family is considering a peaceful natural passing or feels that humane euthanasia may be the kindest choice, we are here to guide you with empathy, clarity, and medical insight. When euthanasia is chosen, we provide this service in a calm, respectful setting; when a natural passing is desired, we help ensure your pet remains comfortable, supported, and at ease throughout the final stages.

Red Sage strives to provide compassionate care to both our pet patients and our clients. Interested persons can inquire about services in office or via email.
